Interior design has always been a passion which continues to evolve as I further commit to my education and the profession. Learning the power interior design casts on the world through public and private spaces has authentically fostered my perception of the practice. As a graduate and a future professional I aspire to create spaces that evoke emotions, inclusion, and sustainability to either public or private spheres of the built environment.
Reducing Environmental Stressors During the Shopping Experience in Grocery Store Design for Individuals with Anxiety
Thesis Capstone Project
The built environment has become more inclusive over the years and has recently begun to explore the connection between design and occupants’ mental wellbeing. Anxiety disorders represent a great percentage of the population, therefore, designing the built environment to support mental health is imperative. Essential tasks such as grocery shopping can become a daunting experience that may lead an individual with anxiety to avoid all together. Avoiding such routinely tasks by ordering groceries online or having another individual pick them up can become detrimental as when feared situations are avoided, anxiety strengthens.. Considering these factors it is important to explore how the store atmosphere of a grocery stores can be designed to support those with anxiety and encourage them to participate in the shopping experience with greater ease and autonomy in hopes of increasing quality of life.
